Mold Abatement is Serious Business.
Be Sure to Pick the Right Contractor.

See farther below.

Mold is a health hazard and it can be very expensive to clean up.  Mold abatement has become a very big business and you will need a bonded, licensed firm to clean up mold if it is of a certain kind.

But beware, with so much money to be made in mold abatement, there are some crooks out there. You should interview several firms if you do not have really strong recommendations from people or firms whom you trust implicitly.

When you interview the contractors, be sure to ASK TO SEE the license of the mold abatement contractor whom you hire.  Ask, too, for the phone numbers of satisfied customers.

THEN ACTUALLY CALL THEM and ask how pleased they were with the firm's services.

Contractors might have given you the names of the ONLY customer that they ever had who were satisfied.  So when you talk to the customers that the contractors give you, YOU ask them for the names of anyone else that they know of who used the same contractor.

Be sure that you have a CAP (limit) on the costs for the mold abatement job. Get an independent party to periodically inspect the contractor's work to see that it is being done thoroughly. With the mess and cost of mold abatement, you do NOT want to repeat the process a year later.  Make sure that your contract or agreement with the contractor includes a warranty.  If you do not feel that the warranty is fair to you, strike out sections and rewrite them.  Maybe the contractor will sign them.

Just be careful. Mold abatement is horrible.  Be sure it is stopped cold forever!

These Are The Key Points To Remember
About Mold and Dealing With It.

  1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.

  2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

  3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.

  4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.

  5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60% ) to decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside; using air conditioners and de-humidifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning.

  6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

  7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.

  8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.

  9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).

  10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.
